Beale Garden

This collection contains records related to the Garden Club of Virginia's renovation of the Beale Garden on Hollins University campus. It includes correspondence, planting lists, dedication speeches, financial information, and publications. It also includes a genealogical report of Lucy Preston Beale's descendants, and a thesis written on the garden in 2008.

Ellen S. Adair Papers

Abstract

This collection contains the Civil War diary of Ellen Adair, who attended Hollins between 1861-1863. Ellen married a Captain in the Confederate Army, Thaddeus Waldo. This collection also includes a short diary from Captain Waldo, which covers August-September 1863. Both the original diaries and typed transcripts are available in this collection. Lastly, the collection also contains a few pieces of correspondence, which have also been transcribed.

Enid Starkie Papers

The Enid Starkie Papers contain materials related to the Irish literary critic, who worked for a time as a visiting professor at Hollins University. She maintained a connection and deep abiding fondness for the University; after her death, her book collection and her Oxford house were gifted to the school. The house has since been sold.

Erich and Leila Rath Papers

This collection contains materials related to Erich and Leila Rath, and their children. Erich Rath was a music teacher and Music Department Director at Hollins College. His wife Leila was a German teacher. Erich wrote his memoirs in 1940, shortly before his death.

This collection contains the historical files and publication run of the Hollins Critic, a student publication created with the support of the Hollins University English Department. The Hollins Critic ran for 70 issues, ending in 2023 after the death in early 2023 of Senior Editor Richard Dillard.

Hollins Family Papers

Their significant financial contributions to the Valley Union Educational Society in the early years of the school allowed the institution to survive difficult years. Ida Sitler was a Professor of Zoology (Biology), at Hollins College from 1920-1947, and was head of the science department for many years. She corresponded with several people and organizations over her time, including the Smithsonian, Clay-Adams Company, Smith College, US Department of Agriculture, and the National Museum in DC, among others.

Joseph A. Turner, Sr, Papers

Abstract

This collection contains material related to Joseph A. Turner Sr.'s teaching career and life. It includes correspondence, lecture notes, handwritten articles, and scrapbooks of printed articles Turner, Sr, wrote. It also contains two editions (one with a handwritten dedication to his wife, Leila Cocke Turner) of his handbook on punctuation. Many materials have been heavily water-damaged, likely in the Flood of 1985; while still readable, the materials are warped and fragile.
