Sarah Holland was born January, 1942 in New York City to parents Robert Chisolm Holland and Pattee Lawrence Holland.She graduated high school in 1960, and attended Hollins University that Fall. Throughout her time at Hollins, Sarah was an active member of the Hollins Community - she was a member of ADA, she was the President of the Class of 1964, and helped to facilitate the production of the Spinster. Sarah also went abroad for her Junior year, studying in Paris at the Sorbonne, where she earned a Diploma of Studies in French Civilization. Her time abroad allowed her to travel widely throughout Europe following her graduation in 1964, and she helped establish a ”Greek Summer” at the American Farm School (1970-1973) in Thessaloniki. In the 1980’s, Sarah Holland returned to her hometown of New York City and began establishing herself as a supporter of the arts, advocate for women, and champion of LGBT equality in the workplace. Throughout her thirty years working in non-profit fundraising, she helped to establish Live from Lincoln Center, and an avant-garde arts organization at Franklin Furnace. Additionally, her work toward social justice included fundraising for the Fresh Air Fund, Project Hope, God’s Love We Deliver, and at Catalyst, she helped create systems that would help women to fight gender bias in the workplace. Her LGBT activism included her establishment of the Visibility Project, which used the models she had created go fight gender bias to redefine corporate culture toward inclusivity and diversity. Sarah was a member of the Hollins University Board of Trustees, and served as President of the Alumnae Board for the last two years of her life.

This collection contains personal affects of Sarah Holland from the years of 1960 to 1971. It includes correspondence between herself and friends, family members, partners, and other individuals. It also includes many photographs of Sarah’s time at Hollins University and abroad, and personal photographs. Additionally, the collection contains memorabilia from her time at Hollins and from her time abroad.
