Biographical / Historical

Erich Rath was born in Germany in March 1866 or 1868. He studied music in Germany before emigrating to America in 1891. He immediately became a professor of music at Hollins, where he met Leila Turner, the granddaughter of founder Charles L. Cocke. They married in 1897 and lived in Washington DC; Erich Rath had accepted a job at Washington College the year before. During that time, Leila gave birth to three girls: Luisa, Gertrude (Gaku), and Virginia (Dinny). Finally, in 1907, they returned to Hollins, where the Rathhaus had been built for their use. This building still exists on campus, and is used for student housing. Leila passed away in 1937, and Erich moved to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, to live with his daughter Dinny. Erich Rath passed away in 1949 and is buried next to his wife in the cemetery on Hollins campus.
