Biographical / Historical
Ellen Adair was born March 30, 1845, at her family's estate of Bell Point, near New River in Giles County, Virginia. She attended Hollins University (Hollins Institute) from 1861-1863. She left Hollins in 1863 after her mother passed away. This was also the year she met Confederate Army Captain Thaddeus P. Waldo. Captain Waldo was the middle of 3 sons; he and his younger brother Isaac joined the Confederate Army, but their oldest brother Jedediah enlisted in the Union Army. Thaddeus and Ellen were married after the war, but sadly Thaddeus died in 1867 in a mill accident. Ellen had one son, Harry, with Thaddeus, possibly born posthumously. She later remarried, in 1872, to Dr. Benjamin Porter Gooch; they had two sons and a daughter together. Ellen died October 14, 1932, and is buried in Hinton, West Virginia.
