John and Ann Hollins were not the founders of Hollins University, but they were very important early financial donors. In recognition of and gratitude for their financial assistance of Hollins in its time of need, the school was named after the family.

The Hollins Family Papers contains information related to John and Ann Hollins, mill owners in Lynchburg Virginia. Their significant financial contributions to the Valley Union Educational Society in the early years of the school allowed the institution to survive difficult years. In gratitude of and recognition for their financial assistance, the Board of Trustees renamed the VUES to Hollins Institute.
